SARA contributes to opening of new data center of LuxConnect

On May 25, in the presence of more than 200 guests, the new data center LuxConnect in Luxembourg has been opened. LuxConnect is a semi-governmental organization aiming to provide optimal Internet connectivity for Luxembourg. For this purpose, LuxConnect has, among others, a 10 Gbps connection with SARA, and has rented co-location space at SARA.

For the opening, SARA has given a number of demonstrations using a high resolution Tiled Panel Display, based on the OptIPuter concept. In this concept data storage and visualization are geographically separated from high-resolution displays; the rendered images are sent as pixels through rapid optical connections.

During the demonstrations, several parallel data streams from Amsterdam to Luxembourg were sent and demonstrated on the display in Luxembourg. The total bandwidth was about 2 Gbps.

Images were shown of 4-K resolution digital film shot in 2007 in Amsterdam, included several other films in HDTV format of the use of Tiled Panels in science, and visualizations of the international GLIF network connectivity. Also some scientific data were presented.
