Enlighten Your Research 3 competition

After two successful editions of the Enlighten Your Research, SURFnet, in partnership with SARA, BiG Grid and NWO have organized the Enlighten Your Research 3 competition in 2011. The competition was open for researchers who want to take their research infrastructure to the next level. Winners receive free use of an e-Infrastructure, which include dynamic lightpaths through the SURFnet network, large data storage and computing time.

SARA is one of the partners of the competition and helps to provide storage and computing power in association with BiG Grid and NWO. SURFnet provides the network infrastructure.

This year, there will also be an additional sustainability prize for the most energy-efficient proposal.

Winners of Enlighten Your Research 3

The winners of a dynamic lightpath are:

• 1st prize: 'Next generation networking for next generation sequencing' – Jan Bot (TU Delft)
• 2nd prize: 'Implementation of a Centralized Image Processing Unit to facilitate Large-Scale Population Imaging Studies' - Henri Vrooman (Erasmus MC)
• Shared 3rd prize: ‘Stream in the Netherlands: an E-Infrastructure for Distributed Visual Analysis of Flooding Scenarios' - Gerwin de Haan (TU Delft) and ‘CONCLUDE: Connecting climate model data for scientific users and decision makers’ - Wilco Hazeleger (Wageningen University).

Sustainability prize

The sustainability prize was granted to Frank Seinstra (Vrije Universiteit) for the proposal 'High-Performance Distributed Multi-Model / Multi-Kernel Simulations', which focuses on smart software for efficient use of architecture and resources.
