Advanced open optical Internet exchange in Amsterdam

NetherLight is an advanced open optical internet exchange, which is realized by SURFnet within the framework of the GigaPort project. By connecting to NetherLight, national and international research networks can research and test models and technical aspects of next generation optical lambda switching facilities. This optical technology will facilitate network services optimized for high-performance applications and grid computing.

Since 2002 NetherLight is located at SARA. In cooperation with the University of Amsterdam SARA participates in SURFnet's NetherLight project.

NetherLight's international connectivity includes, among others:

  • 2x 10 Gbit/s wavelength to the StarLight facility in Chicago, IL, USA, of which 1x10Gbit/s is kindly donated to the lambda community by the NSF, via the Euro-Link program
  • 1x 10 Gbit/s wavelength to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland;
  • 1x 10 Gbit/s wavelength provided by CESNET to the CzechLight facility of CESNET in Prague, Czech Republic;
  • 1x 2.5 Gbit/s wavelength provided by NORDUnet to the NorthernLight facility of NORDUnet in Stockholm, Sweden;
  • 1x 10 Gbit/s wavelength to the UKLight facility in London, UK;
  • 2x 10 Gbit/s wavelengths to the MAN LAN facility in New York City, USA, of which 1x 10Gbit/s is kindly donated to the lambda community by IEEAF/Tyco.
Within the Netherlands, The Radio Astronomy institute ASTRON/JIVE has a dedicated DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) connection into NetherLight, capable of carrying up to 32 times 2.5-Gbps circuits.
