Virtual reality gives insight into classical antiquity
At the University of Amsterdam (UvA) several groups frequently make
use of the possibilities of SARA's virtual reality facility the CAVE.
The Classical Archaeology Group uses the CAVE as well.
Pre-Roman temples
Since 1980, this Group has been conducting excavations on three pre-Roman
temples that were raised for Mater Matuta, goddess of the morning and
new life, at Satricum (Latium, central Italy). These three temples have
been built during a period of 400 years (600-200 BC) at the same location.
Each temple has the characteristics of specific cultural and historical
traditions that evoked in a particular era. Especially the roofs of
these temples are very interesting, as they belong to the best-documented
examples of architectural styles of classical antiquity.
Visualization of a temple
During her research on one of the three ancient pre-Roman temples in
Satricum, UvA archaeologist Patricia Lulof has used the CAVE in a very
surprising way. For the visualization Lulof made use of excavated fragments
of the temple, drawings and literature. All this formed the basis for
a 3-D model of the complete temple that was created with help of SARA's
visualization specialists.
Realistic display in the CAVE
The visualization possibilities of the CAVE made it possible to experience
the temple as a life-size building, but also allowed very detailed investigations.
Using these different perspectives, the researcher could get a good
insight into the principles of the design of the temple.
