Henk Dijkstra
Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) and chair of the Scientific Committee (WGS) of the Netherlands National Computing Facilities foundation (NCF)
Henk A. Dijkstra is professor of dynamical oceanography at the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He received his MSc in applied mathematics at the University of Groningen in 1984. During his Ph.D. he worked in Groningen on a Spacelab experiment involving Marangoni convection under microgravity conditions.
In the period 1988-1990 he continued this research at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Cornell University (USA). In 1990 he started to work on problems in physical oceanography at Utrecht University. His main research interests are in the stability of ocean currents and the physics of low-frequency variability of the climate system. He is the author of the books "Nonlinear Physical Oceanography" (2nd edition, 2005, Springer) and "Dynamical Oceanography" (1st edition, 2008, Springer).
He is a member of the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), currently chairing the Earth Sciences section. In 2005, he received the Lewis Fry Richardson medal from the European Geosciences Union and he recently (2009) was elected a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Since 2006, he is chair of the Scientific Committee (WGS) of the Netherlands National Computing Facilities foundation (NCF).
